Richard Warren found time to answer our question about professional photography.

Q: You works have very sophisticated view, composition, lighting, postprocessing. Do you have a special education? How is it important for photographers to receive education? What schools are the best? Is it possible to become professional photographer just getting self-teaching?

RW: I think most commercial photographers are self taught. I do not have a degree in photography. I have taken courses when I was young to learn about specific things that I did not know. Being a photo assistant is how I leanred and is how most commercial photographers have learned,  Good schools in the US are Hallmark, RIT and LA Art Center.

Q;Do you think working as an assistant is the great way to achieve knowledge?

RW: Most photo assistants are under the age of 30 so learning by assisting is not available to everyone. I do think its the best way to learn but there is so much information now on the web I am sure a lot can be found there.

Q: Do you have assistants in your team? How many? What duties are on them?

RW: I normally use 2 photo assistants. One works on the computer and the other helps me with the lighting stuff. The computer work is backing up images and showing images to the client etc.

Q: Do you invite new assistants and is it possible to get a jod as an assistant in your team?

RW: I get a lot of emails from assistants. I have one assistant that has been with me for ten years. The 2nd assistant is usually a non paid intern.

Q:Do you spend a lot of time on photography? How many shoots do you have every months?

Is every shoot commercial or you sometimes make photos for yourself?

Rw: Probably half commercial and half for myself.

Q: What ratio should photographer have between commercial works and art projects?

RW: The nessicity to earn money is strong. Most commercial photographers do 95 % commercial work. It depends on the photographer and certianly the ratio changes from year to year.

Q: How can photographers promote their works?

RW: Everything now is about the web. Having a website of course but also using FaceBook and other social medias helps.

Q: What are the ways to get attention to their works?

RW: Donating works to charitable organizations is always a good way. Some photographers start their own cause so it apperas that are selling the cause and not the photography but in fact they are marketing their photography.

Q: What are the steps for advertising?

RW: A Facebook page would be a good start. Google Ads another

Q: Can photographer work as a freelancer or it is necessary to sign with photo reps to shoot for famous magazines and campaigns?

RW: Most photographers are freelance. In fashion, all assignments are given to free lancers.

Q: What is the best advice you could give to another photographers who are just starting their career?

RW: Do what ever you can to make money but always have a personal project. You will be remembered by the work that you do , not how much money you had in the bank.

Q: How to become the same famous as you?

RW: I am not really famous but thank you. Keep in mind that I have been at this for 30 years. It takes about ten years to make a name for yourself in fashion. You start with smaller magazines then work up.
